Tips to score high on your AP biology test

The AP Biology exam is undoubtedly a rigorous exam and its format is such that it requires you to apply very different approaches to the two sections. While you have to attempt the MCQs smartly and fairly quickly, a careful and well planned approach is required for the free response section. While the performance on the exam day is undeniably important, the key lies in your preparation leading to the exam since there is a lot of material to be covered which makes memorizing and understanding a lot harder.

When reading your book, after every page identify the key points on the page. Either note them down in a separate notebook or if there is space on the page of the book, write them down there with a lead pencil. Make sure you read every page thrice to get the gist of the page before moving on to the next one. Once you are done with the whole chapter, test yourself. This can be done using the end of the chapter problems or past papers. After you test yourself, assess what your strong and weak areas are. Work harder on the weak areas. Do not make the mistake of ignoring the pictures in the book as they may contain useful information.

Make sure that you are fully prepared for your exam. Discuss your preparation with your friends to make sure you have not missed anything. Avoid creating circumstances that may lead to last minute cramming. On the exam day, trust your memory and preparation as nothing more can be done on your side. It’s important not to panic. Do not try to memorize anything before the AP test as this can lead to stress.

When attempting the MCQ section, make sure that you read every question carefully and completely before asking. Don’t jump on to an option without reading the question completely at least twice. Do not over think and don’t change your first answer until you are absolutely sure that it is wrong because the first instinct is mostly right.

When attempting the free response section, avoid rushing into it before clearly thinking. Do not start writing before you have the whole structure of your writing clear in your head. Plan how you would apply your knowledge carefully. If time is available, do check your work again for minute mistakes. Be done with your exam and wait for the result patiently.
